Why a Wheat Ridge display has to carry forty feet

Wheat Ridge lots are deep. A lot of these houses sit thirty or forty feet back from the sidewalk behind a long lawn, which is lovely to live with and awkward to decorate. A small group of pumpkins on the top step disappears at that distance. It reads as a smudge of orange from the street and nothing more. So we build for the viewing distance rather than for the doorstep. That means bigger shapes, fewer of them, and a deliberate gap between groups so the eye can separate them at forty feet. The Little package can work here if the display sits close to the walk, but on a really deep setback most people are happier with the Full, because thirty odd pumpkins and two hay bales still hold together when you look at them from a car.

Ranch houses, low stoops and wide fronts

The classic Wheat Ridge house is a long low ranch with a wide front and a shallow stoop, sometimes just a slab and one step. There is no deep porch to fill and no rail to build against, so the display has to sit on the ground and hold its own shape. We work along the front of the house rather than piling everything at the door. A run of pumpkins that follows the foundation line, a hay bale at each end of the group in the Full and Fairy Tale packages, and the largest fruit set where the walk meets the step. Wide fronts also give us the option of two smaller groups instead of one, which suits a house with a picture window you would rather not block.

Working under the old cottonwoods and maples

Wheat Ridge has real trees. Big cottonwoods, silver maples and ash that went in decades ago and now shade most of a front yard. That changes two things. First, deep shade flattens color, so an arrangement that looks strong on a sunny lot can go muddy under a dense canopy. We place the group where whatever light you do get actually lands, and the neutral no orange palette at $75 is popular on these lots because it holds contrast better under a canopy. Second, a pumpkin sitting in permanent damp shade on wet grass softens at the base sooner than one on stone. We put the larger pieces on a hard surface or on a bale wherever we can. If your yard is heavily shaded, tell us when you ask us and we will plan around it.

Mid August to 31 October on a deep lot

Our season runs from mid August to 31 October, and Wheat Ridge gives you a longer usable window than the foothills towns because the hard freezes come later down here. The catch is the leaf drop. By the middle of October the cottonwoods let go all at once, and a display that was crisp in September ends up buried under a week of leaves. Clearing them off is easy enough and most people just do it when they rake. If snow flattens the arrangement, re-staging after snow is a service we offer and we will come back out. What we do not do is collect anything at the end. The display is yours to keep, and once a booking is made we cannot refund or cancel it, so it is worth choosing your delivery week carefully.

Questions from Wheat Ridge

My front yard is fully shaded. Will the pumpkins still show up?

Shade does flatten color, so we adjust for it. We place the group where the best light lands and use larger shapes that read at distance. On very dark lots the neutral no orange palette at $75 often looks better than standard orange, because it keeps contrast under a heavy canopy.

Can I have the display closer to the sidewalk instead of the door?

Yes, and on a deep Wheat Ridge lot that is often the better call. We can build at the end of the front walk, around a mailbox post or against a low wall. Tell us where you want it seen from and we will place it there on the day.

What happens to it all on 1 November?

It stays with you. We do not collect or remove anything, so the pumpkins, hay bales and mums are yours to do what you like with. Plenty of Wheat Ridge customers compost them at the back of a deep lot, or keep the bales for a garden bed.
