Superior sits high and open with very little upwind of it, and an autumn display here lives or dies on how it is anchored. We turn up with whole uncarved pumpkins and build low, staked and weighted for the ground you are actually on.

Wind is the design constraint here

Superior sits on open ground with grassland to the west and not much between the town and the mountain front. Downslope wind events here run stronger and more often than they do four miles east, and the autumn ones tend to arrive with no warning and from due west. That changes the build completely. We put the heaviest fruit low and on the windward face, we stake bales rather than setting them down, we key the arrangement into a step riser, a post or a wall corner so it cannot walk, and we leave nothing standing proud with a flat face to catch. Loose straw is kept to a minimum for the same reason. If a real event goes through and moves things anyway, let us know and we will come out and re-stake it properly.

A Rock Creek frontage is mostly garage

Most Superior homes are Rock Creek era, which means a modest covered stoop, a short path, and a two car garage door taking up more than half the elevation. Building only at the door leaves the display looking apologetic next to all that garage. We treat the whole frontage as one composition instead, a main group at the entry where you see it up close, and a second lower run at the garage edge or the driveway apron so the house is balanced from the street. Lot sizes are tight, so we keep everything inside your line and off the neighbor's grass. Where the stoop is genuinely small, and plenty of them are, we build up rather than out, using the porch column and the step returns to gain height.

Full sun, new sod and young trees

Large parts of Superior are young ground. Landscaping is still establishing across a lot of the town, the street trees are not throwing much shade yet, and a west facing entry can sit in direct sun from midday until it drops behind the hills. Sun ages a display faster than cold does, by a distance. So we set the harder skinned and paler varieties where the exposure is worst, keep fruit off hot concrete where we can, and turn the best faces away from the afternoon side so they stay presentable into the last week of October. If your entry is genuinely shaded, we do the reverse and put the deeper colors out front, because they hold up fine and read better in flat light.

Covenants, walkways and the bits we keep clear

Superior is heavily governed by covenants and most of them have something to say about the front of your house. A seasonal display is rarely what anybody objects to, but the details matter. We keep the arrangement inside your property line and out of the sidewalk easement, we do not block the walk or a shared path, and we stay clear of hydrants, utility boxes and mailbox clusters. If your association has a specific setback, or a rule about what can sit on a driveway, tell us at booking and we will build inside it. Worth checking before you book rather than after, because we do not cancel or refund a booking once it is made. A photo of the finished build is easy to supply if a board ever asks.

Questions from Superior

We get windstorms here. What happens if the display gets blown apart?

Message us and we come out and re-stake it. We build for wind in the first place, low and anchored into something solid, so a normal gusty week does not touch it. A serious downslope event is different, and it can move anything, including things that are not pumpkins.

Does our HOA need to approve the display before we book?

We cannot answer for your association and it is worth a quick check. Most Superior covenants take no issue with a seasonal front display, but rules vary between filings. Do the check first, because once a booking is made we do not cancel it and we do not refund.

Will hay bales damage new sod?

They can flatten and yellow the grass underneath if they sit on it for ten weeks. On the newer Superior lawns we set bales on the driveway edge, the front path or a mulch bed instead. Tell us where the new turf is and we will keep the weight off it.
