A long driveway changes where the display should go

On the larger Niwot properties the front door is not the thing anybody sees. You come in off a county road, down a gravel or paved drive, and the porch only appears in the last thirty yards. Building everything at the door wastes most of the fruit. What works out here is two groups, a full arrangement at the porch for the people who live there and arrive on foot from the car, and a smaller anchored group at the drive entrance or by the gate posts, where it does the work of announcing the place. We split a Full or a Fairy Tale that way regularly. It is the same quantity of fruit and the same price as a single build, just arranged where the property actually asks for it.

The wind here has come down a canyon

Niwot sits on open ground with the canyon mouths of the foothills to the west and north west, and the wind that reaches you has usually picked up speed on the way down. There is very little built shelter between those canyons and most Niwot addresses, particularly the acreage out beyond the old center. Practically, that means we do not build tall and narrow, we stake into ground rather than relying on weight alone wherever there is soil to stake into, and we set bales as anchors instead of decoration. Cottonwoods give real shelter along the creek lines and we use it when a property has it. If a windy week moves something regardless, tell us and we come out and re-stake the display.

Old Town Niwot is walked, not driven

The few blocks around Second Avenue behave completely differently to the acreage. People park once and walk, the houses are close together and modest, and the porches sit near enough to the sidewalk that a display is seen properly. There the composition is small scale and detailed, built against the porch posts and step edges rather than spread across a lawn. Little and Full both work on those lots, and Fairy Tale is usually too much for the frontage. It is also the part of Niwot where your porch is in conversation with the neighbors' porches, which most people enjoy. We build with that in mind, keeping the arrangement generous but inside the property line so the whole run of the street still reads as a street.

Bigger frontages take the bigger packages

Niwot skews to larger builds, mostly because the properties are larger. Fairy Tale, with its two jumbo pumpkins, gets booked here more than anywhere else in our zone, and extra hay bales get added often because there is ground to fill and fences and outbuildings to build against. The Grand Prize Pumpkin at $175 comes up more here too, usually as the single anchor at the front of a wide porch or at the head of a drive. Mums go in where there are established beds to plant against. What almost nobody books in Niwot is the neutral palette. It is a design that suits a modern gray elevation, and against timber, stone and a working yard the traditional mix simply looks more correct.

Questions from Niwot

Can you build one group at the porch and another at the end of the drive?

Yes, and on the acreage properties we usually suggest it. The package quantity is split across the two positions rather than doubled. The drive group gets anchored harder because it has no shelter from the house, and we keep it well clear of the turning line for a vehicle.

Our address is unincorporated county rather than a town. Does that matter?

No. Niwot addresses sit inside the included delivery zone whether they are in the old center or out on acreage, and there is no separate charge for the drive. County properties tend to have more ground to work with, which usually makes the build easier rather than harder.

What is the Grand Prize Pumpkin and does it suit a big frontage?

It is a single very large specimen added at $175 and placed as the center of the composition. On a wide Niwot porch, or at the head of a drive, it gives the arrangement a clear focal point. On a small frontage it dominates everything and we would talk you out of it.
