Building a display that survives a Nederland autumn

Nederland freezes earlier, snows sooner and has more bear traffic than anywhere we deliver, so nothing gets booked until we have talked. We bring whole uncarved pumpkins and build the display on your deck or at your door.

Cold arrives first up here

Nederland sits a long way above the metro and the season behaves accordingly. Nights drop below freezing here in September, sometimes in August, and snow that would be a novelty in Denver is routine. That matters because a pumpkin that freezes through does not come back. The skin goes translucent, then soft, then it collapses. So we plan Nederland displays around a shorter useful life than a Denver one. We choose the firmest fruit for the pieces that carry the arrangement, we keep everything up off frozen ground and off cold stone, and we are honest with you about timing. If you want a display at its best on the last day of October, a mid October build usually beats an August one up here, and we will tell you that when you ask us.

Decks, steps and steep dirt drives

Access is a real question in Nederland. Plenty of houses here are up a steep unpaved drive, sometimes a long one, sometimes with a turn that is tight for anything carrying a load. Many entries are a raised deck reached by a flight of wooden steps rather than a porch at ground level. None of that stops us, but all of it has to be known in advance, which is part of why we ask foothills customers to talk to us before booking. Tell us how the drive runs, whether there is anywhere to turn, and how many steps there are between the parking spot and the door. If everything has to be carried a hundred feet uphill, we would rather plan for it than discover it. On a deck we spread weight and keep the group clear of the steps.

Bears in town, not just around it

Nederland has bears in town, not only on the edges of it, and they are feeding hard through September and October. A pile of pumpkins on a deck by the kitchen door is exactly what they are looking for, and once one finds it, it will come back. We will not build something we think is going to be wrecked in a week, and we will not tell you it is fine when it is not. So we talk first. We look at where your bins go, which way your door faces, and whether the display would sit on a deck or on open ground, then we agree a placement you are happy with before any booking exists. Sometimes the honest answer is a smaller arrangement in a spot where a visit costs you less.

Wind, snow and what happens afterwards

Between the freezes, a Nederland lot takes wind that most metro customers never experience, and it usually comes with snow attached. A wet heavy snow in October will bury a display, and when it settles the arrangement is not where anyone left it. Bales sag, pots blow over, and smaller fruit ends up downhill. We build for that from the start with a low profile, stakes driven into ground where there is ground, and heavier pieces placed where the house or a wall breaks the wind. When weather does take it apart, re-staking after wind and re-staging after snow are both services we offer and we will come back up. We do not remove the display at the end of the season, and bookings once made are final.

Questions from Nederland

Will pumpkins survive at this elevation?

For a while, yes, but not as long as they do in Denver. Hard freezes come early in Nederland and frozen fruit turns soft rather than recovering. We plan the build date with you around that, and most people here choose a later delivery than metro customers do for exactly that reason.

My drive is steep dirt and my door is up a deck. Can you still do it?

Usually. We just need to know before you book. Tell us how long the drive is, whether there is a turnaround at the top, and how many steps lead up to the deck. Once we know what the carry looks like, we can give you an honest yes or no.

Do you offer the same packages up here as in the metro?

The packages are the same three sizes. What differs is what we recommend. A large display on an exposed Nederland deck is more likely to be hit by weather or found by a bear, so we often suggest something smaller placed somewhere less tempting and less exposed.
