Lafayette lots are wide, and a small display gets lost on them

Old Town Lafayette has deeper setbacks and wider frontages than its neighbors, which changes what a porch display has to do. We arrive with whole uncarved pumpkins and compose on site, scaled so it still reads from the street.

The frontage is the problem, not the porch

The older blocks around Public Road were platted generously. Front lawns run deep, the street trees are mature, and a lot of the houses sit well back from the sidewalk with a path across grass to a modest stoop. That combination eats a small display. Eighteen pumpkins on a step, seen from forty feet away through a maple, is a smudge of orange and nothing more. So in Lafayette we usually push the arrangement forward off the porch, work the edges of the front path and the base of the steps, and use hay bales to build a second mass at ground level that carries the eye in from the street. That placement costs nothing extra. It is simply a different composition than we would build on a tight lot.

A good number of Lafayette houses on the newer west and north sides look straight at the Front Range, and the ground is open enough that you get the full width of the sky. In October that means long low light from late afternoon onward, and it is genuinely the best hour for a display. It also means glare, and color that sits flat at midday comes alive later. We take that into account, putting the pale and buff fruit where the low sun catches it and keeping the deep orange in the shaded half so it does not bleach out over ten weeks. The same open aspect is why we stake rather than stack on those lots. There is nothing upwind of you out there to slow anything down.

Frost helps a display, August sun does not

The first hard freeze on this stretch of the plains usually lands somewhere in October, and it is good news for pumpkins. Cold firms the fruit and slows the softening, and the straw goes a silvered color that looks better than fresh gold does. The risk in Lafayette is at the other end of the season. If you book for mid August, the display sits through several weeks of strong high altitude sun before the weather turns, and the face pointed at that sun ages first. We plan for it, orienting the tougher skinned varieties to take the exposure and keeping the group slightly off the hot concrete of a south facing path. Early builds work well here. They just have to be composed with the whole ten weeks in mind.

Who books in Lafayette and when

Lafayette bookings skew towards households with school age children, and towards the long season rather than a single event. People book in August, want it up before the school year settles, and expect it to still look composed at the end of October. That pushes most of them to Full, which gives enough fruit to hold a wide frontage together and two bales to anchor the base. Fairy Tale gets booked on the bigger newer lots where the frontage is genuinely large and the two jumbo pumpkins have room to be the point of the thing. Little is the right call for a small stoop or a townhouse entry, of which Lafayette has more than people assume. We would rather talk you down a package than sell you one that swamps the house.

We have a lot of lawn and a very small stoop. Where would it sit?

Mostly off the porch. We run the arrangement down the step edges and along the front path, with a bale group at ground level to give it size. On a deep Lafayette lot that reads far better from the street than a tidy pile on a stoop nobody can see.

How early in August can you build in Lafayette?

From the middle of the month. Some households want it up straight away and others prefer the first week of September so it peaks later. Either is fine and the price is the same. Bookings are firm once made, so pick your date knowing we do not cancel or refund.

Can we add hay bales or mums after the display is already built?

Yes. Bales are $25 each and mums are $25 each, and we can bring them on a return visit and work them into the existing composition. People often add a pair of mums in late September once the summer planting on the porch has finished for the year.
