Golden is built on a slope, and slope is the whole design problem. We deliver whole uncarved pumpkins to your door and build the display in place, staked and seated so it holds its shape on a hillside entry instead of drifting toward the street.

Why pumpkins roll in Golden

Golden sits where the plains run into the first hills, and almost nothing here is flat. Driveways tip, front walks climb, and lawns fall away toward the street. A pumpkin set down on a slope like that does not sit politely. It creeps, it turns, and by the second week it has found the gutter. So the first thing we do on a Golden install is read the fall of your ground before we place a single piece. Heavy fruit goes on the uphill side of a step or a wall where the ground works for us. Anything sitting on a grade gets bedded so it has a flat seat rather than a rolling one, and the smaller pumpkins get tucked against the larger ones. It is slower than a flat lot in Thornton, and it is the reason a Golden display still looks arranged in October.

Split level entries and the half flight of steps

A lot of Golden was built up in the 1960s and 1970s, and the split level is everywhere. The front door sits half a level above the drive, you get a short run of steps, a small landing, and often a low planter wall or a rail on one side. That is not much floor to work with, and a display that would sit comfortably on a wide flat porch just blocks the door. We build these vertically instead. Pumpkins step up the treads at the outside edge so the walking line stays clear, the landing carries a tight group rather than a sprawl, and the hay bales in the Full and Fairy Tale packages usually go at the base where they anchor the whole thing visually. If your entry turns a corner, we wrap it rather than fighting it.

Canyon wind and how we stake for it

Air comes down Clear Creek Canyon and out over town, and the west facing side of Golden feels it first. Autumn is when it gets serious. A gust that does nothing to a jumbo pumpkin will still tip a mum pot, scoot a hay bale, and shift the smaller fruit downhill an inch at a time until the whole group is crooked. We plan for it in the build. Tall material is staked into the ground rather than propped, pots go on the sheltered side of the entry where the house itself does the work, and we keep the profile of the display below the line where wind gets a real grip. If a hard blow does move something, re-staking after wind is a service we offer, so call us rather than wrestling a heavy pumpkin back up a slope yourself.

Mid August in Golden, and what the season actually does

We start delivering in mid August and we finish on 31 October, and in Golden the early end of that window is worth taking seriously. The first three weeks are hot and bright, and a display on a west facing entry works harder than one under a porch roof. If your door faces the mountains and takes the whole afternoon, we will talk to you about placing the heaviest pumpkins where the house throws shade after two. Golden also gets its first real cold snap earlier than the neighborhoods further out on the plains, and a hard freeze can soften fruit that is sitting directly on cold stone. We raise pieces off the coldest surfaces where it matters. The display is yours to keep from the day we build it, and we do not come back to take it away.

Questions from Golden

My driveway is steep. Where will the display actually go?

Almost always at the entry rather than on the drive itself. We look for the first flat or near flat surface next to your door, usually a landing, a step edge or a planter wall, and we build off that. If nothing on your lot is level, we bed the larger pumpkins so they sit rather than roll.

Do you charge extra to come to Golden?

Yes. Golden is in our Denver metro zone, so there is a $100 delivery charge on top of the package price. That covers getting everything to your address and building the display on site. There is nothing further to pay unless you add hay bales, mums or a Grand Prize Pumpkin.

Something blew over after a windy night. What now?

Message us and we will come out and re-stake it. Re-staking after wind is a service we offer through the season, and Golden gets more of that wind than most of the metro. Please do not try to lift a jumbo pumpkin back into place on a slope yourself.
