Three car garages and a small front door

Most Frederick houses built in the last twenty years lead with a wide garage face, a modest covered entry set back beside it, and a big apron of concrete in front. The entry is often the smallest element on the elevation, which is why plain porch pots disappear on these streets. We treat the driveway edge as part of the composition instead of ignoring it, running a line of pumpkins from the walk toward the door so there is something to follow. Height matters more here than in older towns, so bales go in early to lift the arrangement clear of the ground plane. On a Full or Fairy Tale build we will often split the arrangement, putting the mass at the entry and a smaller anchor at the drive, which reads properly from a car as well as from the sidewalk.

Wind across the Carbon Valley flats

Frederick sits on open ground east of the foothills with very little in the way of natural shelter, and the newer subdivisions have no mature trees yet to slow anything down. Wind here is not an occasional event. It is a normal Tuesday. So nothing in a Frederick build is balanced. Everything is seated, bedded or pinned, with the heaviest fruit placed where the gusts hit first and the light material kept tight against the house. Bales are anchored rather than set loose, because a bale that moves takes the whole arrangement with it. If a strong front does move something, re-staking is a service we offer, and we will re-stage a build after wet snow. Uncarved pumpkins are a real advantage in this, since a whole fruit is heavy, sealed and slow to go soft.

The older core and the streets that grew around it

Frederick still has a small original core of older cottages and modest houses on tight lots, laid out long before the subdivisions arrived. Those homes have low stoops, short walks and something the new ones lack, which is scale you can reach across. A Little build looks generous on a house like that, while it would look thin on a five bedroom elevation half a mile away. When we quote in Frederick we ask which part of town you are in, because the same package produces very different results between the old streets and the new. Newer neighborhoods take volume well and usually need it. The older core needs restraint and careful placement, and often looks best with the display kept close to the door rather than pushed out to the curb.

October evenings and who walks past

Frederick is a walking town in the evening once the heat goes out of the day, and the sidewalk network in the newer parts means a lot of people pass a given porch between five and eight. Displays here get seen on foot and from the car, which is why we build them to work at both distances. Front lighting matters more than people expect. If you have a porch light or a lamp on a timer, tell us and we will place the tallest elements where the light falls rather than where it does not. Bookings run heaviest in the first three weeks of September in Frederick, later than Erie or Broomfield, so if you want an August build it is worth asking early.

Our porch is small but the driveway is wide. Where would you build?

Both, usually. We put the main mass at the entry so the door reads as the focus, then set a smaller group at the driveway edge to draw the eye in. It stops the display getting swallowed by the garage, which is the standard problem on Frederick elevations.

How early can we get a build in August?

Our season opens in mid August, and Frederick dates in those first two weeks tend to go to people who booked in July. If you want the display standing for the full run, ask about August when you first get in touch rather than waiting for September.

Do you come back and take it away at the end of the season?

No. The display belongs to you once it is built, and we do not collect or remove it. Most Frederick customers break it down themselves in early November, keep the bales for the garden and compost the pumpkins. What we do come back for is re-staking and re-staging.
